Country in Focus-Jamaica
FOUNDATION-
The Genesis of the people of the land called Jamaica today could be traced to the second voyage to the new world by the renown Spanish explorer - Christopher Columbus. According to the information, Jamaica was discovered by Christopher Columbus on May 4, 1494 before then were the 'Arawak"- Indians who were systematically killed by the spanaiards, who belaboured them all to death. The Arawak Indians gave their land-'Xaymaca" from where the today's Jamaica was coined out by the European invaders . The spaniards were the first settlers to build the first town of Sevilla and Neuva near St.Ann's bay in 1509
LANGUAGE-
The official language os the Jamaicans is English Language and a local language-Patois
RELIGION-
Majority practise Christain Religion and other religions are Muslim, Jewish, Hindus, and Bahai communities.
STRUCTURE-
Island, 235km long and width varying 35km and 93km, The Third largest of the caribbean island. Jamaica is 4,411 square miles a mountanous country and 1,000 feet above sea level. The Highest mountain is Blue mountain peak 7402 feet and 2,256 metres above sea level.
COLONIALISM-
A British colony when the English captured the Spaniards. the English turn the Island of Jamaica into Vast sugar plantation which was a lucrative business and made them very, very rich.
To grow sugar cane, the british brought many Africans to work as slaves and most of the slaves are from west coast of Africa. When this slaves were freed in 1838 many of them deserted the plantation and settled down on the Hills to cultivate their own small plot and they were the "back bone" of Jamaica today and they formed there own independent groups called the "Maroons".
CAPITAL-
The capital of Jamaica is Kingston. Formerly Spanish Town for over 300 years and its 13 miles away from Kingston.
INDEPENDENCE-
Monday 6, August, 1962 after 300 years of British colonianism.
